After Easter the snow began to melt rapidly. Soon the streets were dry and the kids traded in their snow gear for rubber boots and chalk. I wasn't able to get all of the summer toys out yet but I did get a recently purchased bike setup for the girls to start using. I took the pedals off so that they could sit on it and kick themselves around, but there were no training wheels to help them balance.
During Easter Sunday Dinner the kids worked out a deal with Nana to have a sleepover at her house one of the next weekends. When the time came Max had come down with a very bad cold so the girls went over for the night and Max stayed with us. We took him shopping for more big boy underwear, took him out to dinner, and hung out at home and let him play with his loud toys.
While at dinner (Red Robin) he told the waitress "you're cute when you talk like that." That boy's charm earned him a coulpe of special treats, including a free strawberry lemonade she gave him for the road.
By the next morning he was feeling much better so he went to Anchorage with me to pick up the girls. On the drive home all three kids were silent except for their little learning laptops they just got from Nana and Poppop. I thought it was really cute how all three of them were setup with their own little laptops like a picture of professional men and women sitting in business class.
Amelia got to do a couple of after school activities in April including an art class and then a hip hop class (You have to pronounce "hhhip hopp" like Hank Hill.) During the time that she was going to the hhhip hopp classes we found out there was going to be a performance at the end but Amelia didn't want us to go, she didn't want to have to do it in front of us.
Well, we showed up anyway and got to see her dance, but as soon as she saw us you could tell she was not very happy about it. Whoops. Anyway it was fun to see her.
THE GIRLS ARE RIDING TWO WHEELERS!!!
This has got to be one of my favorite milestones so far. As the snow has melted the neighborhood kids are staying out later and later. Both Addison and Amelia have been practicing kicking around on that green bike with no pedals. One night after dinner Amelia was kicking around in the cul-du-sac and I said "Hey Amelia, get going as fast as you can to that yellow line and then lift up your legs and see how far you can go."
She did it and coasted all the way down to our driveway without using her feet to balance. I was very excited and asked if I can put the pedals on and have her try riding it like a regular bike. Boom, first try and she has not used training wheels since. I quickly removed the training wheels from her regular bike and now that has turned into her favorite thing to do outside.
Addison was very proud of her but you could see her more competitive sprit coming out of the not so subtle stares and glares as we were praising Amelia. I asked her if she was ready to try it and just like her sister FIRST TRY! Addison has not used training wheels since.
Amelia has been working on her "vampire bat power" which she says makes her pedal her bike faster and longer. Addison on the other hand keeps asking me to build her a jump. The other night I walked into the backyard and saw her dragging her bike up the hill and I yelled "Sissy what are you doing!?"
In one motion she had flipped her bike around, jumped on the seat and yelled "riding down the hill!" She knew she better do it before I thought too hard about it. She rolled over some large bumps and rocks and made an abrupt stop when she reached the fence, then she yells "THAT WAS FUN, THAT HURT MY PRIVATES!" I was laughing so hard. Since then she has learned to put her weight on her pedals when traversing bumpy terrain.
For Grandma Nettie's birthday we had her and Grandpa Don over for a birthday brunch. Christina made a sausage and cheese quiche, vanilla scones (glazed,) fruit salad, tea, and mimosas. The girls were excited to show off their two wheeler riding skills. Oh and Christina waxed Grandpa Don's nose hairs. :)
